Culture Tonga Facts
1.
  • Do Tongans observe the Sabbath?
Yes, Sunday is strictly observed and it is widely accepted that no work is conducted by Tongans on that day.
2.
  • What is considered 'impolite' in Tonga?
It is considered impolite to cause a Tongan to lose face, so it is best to avoid conflict, even if you find yourself frustrated by a broken promise or slowness in fulfilling a promised task. Tongans have a happy, relaxed attitude to life and so the best way is to smile, not get impatient, and not embarrass your gracious hosts.
3.
  • What is the traditional dress of Tongans?
The traditional dress is a ta'ovala, a woven pandanus wrap. For men, these are short and tied with a kafa, or coconut fibre twine, below which is a 'skirt' or 'vala'. For women, the ta'ovala is a little longer to the knees, tied with a waistband, and again worn over a vala.
