There are public buses on the main island of Tongatapu - cheap and a good way of getting to know the local residents. They start to run early in the day, but be cautious as they stop running fairly early in the day and do not run on Sundays.

Are taxis available in Tonga?
Taxis are found on the main island - capital Nuku'alofa - recognisable as they have the letter "T" in their numberplate. Public transport is less common in the outer islands, though taxis can be found on Vava'u also.

Do I need an international driver's licence?
Neither international nor foreign driving licences are accepted in Tonga. You need to obtain a Tonga driving licence at the Traffic Department (Central Police Station) before hiring a car or scooter. Allow at least an hour of queuing and filling forms!
